THE PRICE OF AN EYE

Listen now to a story carefully hidden from the Seven Worlds for all time. Only I, Loki the unfaithful, father of lies, free-handed spender of words, have the courage to tell you the truth in this matter, of how Odin Allfather lost his hold over the gods of Asgard and all the worlds, by reason of his own over-reaching ambition.

Yes, Arse-born, the ambition of Odin was without end. It was back then, it is now. With runes he had captured wisdom and power from the roots the worlds, but it was still not enough. It rankled that those flipperty-gibbety Ljósálfar, the light elves, had uncovered the secret of eternal youth and not him. It rankled that there were not enough apples to go round. He wanted more, more, always more. But what more was there? He owned the Seven Worlds and all that happened in them. As Lord of All, he owned the present and had the past written to his own taste.

The future, Arse-born. The Lord of the Past and Present wanted to own the future as well. You see how even your mortal ambition, gross though it is, palls beside that of the Lord of Gods. And so, in due course, there was another expedition, one that he made with the breath still in him this time – down to the deeps again to see Mimir, eldest, sole survivor of the days before Odin, that god who dwelled outside of the Seven created Worlds, down at the well at the roots of Yggdrasil. That journey too was successful. And yet it did not turn out as he had planned.
